2024 Royal Three Counties Show. 14th – 16th June 2024
By Rosemary Hart
"Champion Shire in hand and qualifier for the Horse of the Year Show was Bryan Banham’s brood mare, Acle Celebration, shown by Joe Gladden. An eight-year-old daughter of Metheringham Upton Hamlet and Acle Annabelle, Celebration has a foal at foot, a bay colt by Old Croft Sergio.
Reserve Championship was Michael Butterworth’s Springwell Pearl, winner of the class for barren mares and geldings, the strongest of the day. She is a dark bay 11-year-old by Metheringham Upton Sidney out of Metheringham Upton Peggy. For the second year running, Michael White’s White Swan Phoebe, a lovely feminine Percheron by Hales Hercules out of Willingham Mary, was best of any other breed.
The teams turnout class went to Annette and Ailsa Noble’s team of four Clydesdales, Lizzie, Georgina, Prince and Woody, after which Ailsa and Lizzie qualified for the two-wheeled cart class at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS). She beat mother Annette with Prince into third place, with the only horse ever to have qualified for two separate championships at HOYS, Lindy Winship’s Westfield Calendar Girl, separating them. In a strong pairs class, Richard Green with Daniel Thwaites’ black Shires, Regal and Drummer, had the edge over six other good pairs representing three breeds. Kevin Morris and his black Shire Bickerscourt Masterpiece won the singles class.
Charlotte Webb’s 16-year-old grey, Dothan Silver Coin, is always a wonderful sight, but was the only agricultural entry. For the second year running, Barrie Yeates’ Cowerslane Hamlet won the working harness class."
